When I look at Cleansing Foods, the natural way by Debbie Millman, I am reminded of my mother, who is a great advocate for living a healthy lifestyle. I enjoy her simple recipes, and the holistic approach she takes to our health and wellness.

In fact, as a teenager, I recall my mother always telling me to eat lots of vegetables, nuts, and lightly cooked or nutritionally dense fruits and whole grains. This just goes to show that Mother Nature was a whole lot wiser than we can ever be!

We can eat the same nutritious and nutrient-dense foods without having to worry about being overweight or becoming sick. The Food Pyramid recommends some food groups in the nutritional pyramid. But it leaves out all the other important nutrient groups. Here is a list of essential nutrient groups that should be included in the pyramid.

List Of Essential Nutrient Groups

Although not an exhaustive list, these groups are the best food choices to add to the list of Cleansing Foods. They include complex carbohydrates, fiber, Vitamin A, C, E, K, and minerals.

In today’s world, so many of us don’t get enough of the above-mentioned nutrients. It is not surprising that most people are obese and overweight. So, the good news is, there are steps we can take to ensure we are getting the proper nutrients.

Vitamin D

Sunburns and Vitamin D deficiency are common causes of premature aging. These deficiencies can lead to various diseases and sicknesses, such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, etc. Vitamin D is a crucial vitamin that is found in meats, dairy products, eggs, and seafood.

This vitamin is also found in foods that come from the sea, such as fish, algae, krill, and shrimp. With all these nutrients, it is no wonder that Cleansing Foods is such a beneficial book for the body.

Some other Vitamins

Vitamins like A, C, D, E, and K are collectively referred to as carotenoids. It is this group of vitamins that are responsible for the pigment colors in the eyes. For example, the red, yellow, orange, and green pigments we see are the result of the presence of these vitamins.

This is just one example of how nutrients can be found in a wide variety of foods that we usually consider “vitamin-deficient.” Those recommended in the book include salmon, wild rice, salmon and trout, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin seeds. Other foods that are highly recommended are alfalfa, spinach, walnuts, oatmeal, green peas, berries, sesame seeds, liver, kidneys, and eggs.

Supplements

The supplements recommended for cleansing diets are sometimes high in vitamin D and cannot be used as a substitute for regular eating. They are primarily needed for use with those who have low levels of this vitamin in their systems.
